Sea Cadets at St Michael's and a barbecue after the service

2018 marks the bicentenary of the Sailors' society.

Two hundred years ago, following the Napoleonic wars, which resulted in the loss of more than 90,000 men from the British navy, a determined group of preachers and laymen pledged to “alleviate the worldly woes” of distressed sailors and their families.

On Sunday 8th July we at St Michael's will be joined in our 10:30 service by the Edgware and Mill Hill branch of the Sea Cadets, who meet in our Cabin.

During the service they will provide a Guard of Honour, and give us demonstrations of signalling, drumming, and other activites.

After the service, the Sea Cadets will be hosting a barbecue in the Vicarage garden.

This is free for all to attend (donations are welcome, but not obligatory).

All food and drink will be provided - it is not a "bring and share".

Come and join us for a celebration of the oldest maritime charity in the world, outstanding performances by our Sea Cadets, and complete the day with the finest garden party which Mill Hill can provide!

Eternal Father, strong to save,

Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,

Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep

Its own appointed limits keep;

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea!

-- William Whiting, after Psalm 107:

23 Some went out on the sea in ships;
    they were merchants on the mighty waters.
24 They saw the works of the Lord,
    his wonderful deeds in the deep.
25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
    that lifted high the waves.
26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
    in their peril their courage melted away.
27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards;
    they were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out of their distress.
29 He stilled the storm to a whisper;
    the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 They were glad when it grew calm,
    and he guided them to their desired haven.
31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
